Quarter 1 Week 9

Good Morning Families of 3C!

It is hard to believe we are entering the last week of our first quarter in school! I would like to start by thanking each and every one of you for entrusting your most prized possessions to us this year. It has been a pure joy to get to know our scholars and build lasting relationships with each one. We have already seen so much growth and look forward to seeing their progress at the end of the year! Tomorrow Mrs. Bowers makes her return and we are delighted to have her back. Be on the lookout for a blog post and email later today from Mrs. Bowers!

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend, we had a wonderful day of professional development with lots of great tools to bring back to our classrooms! I also enjoyed some family time this weekend as Charlotte got her first haircut! My grandfather has been a barber for the past 30 years and gave me my first haircut, it was great to see him be able to carry on this tradition with my daughter. While she wasn't too happy about it now, I look forward to showing her these memories down the road!

Now a look at our week:

Language Arts:
The end of Quarter 1 is truly a feather in the cap of our 3rd graders! They have learned so much in Language Arts and should be proud of all the skills they have gained. We will study 30 words per usual this week end complete the week with a spelling test on Friday. As our final writing assignment of the quarter, the class will be working on a formal descriptive paragraph and we will go through the entire writing process, from brainstorming to the final draft.  We will wrap up our reading of Pinocchio by Wednesday and begin a Virtue project surrounding the book. The students will make a paper puppet in class and assign a virtue to each part of the puppet to explain how they “embody” the virtues. This project will mostly be completed on Friday as we celebrate the story together.

Math:
We will be learning to multiply multiple digit numbers by 2, 3, 4, and 5 this week (ex. 6752x3). Please plan to provide lots of support with homework as this is a challenging concept and brand new for them! There will be a quiz on Friday after a long practice/review session.

Science:
It is hard to believe our first quarter is over and we have completed our first unit of study on Classification. We will take time to work on reading comprehension and fluency skills this week  by reading an article on Mammals and working together to answer comprehension questions that follow. We will use our science time to write a persuasive essay about the animals we have been learning about and will finish out our short week with an assessment over what we have learned throughout the first quarter.

History:
This week in history we will start to learn about Ancient Rome! We will look at maps, learn about the origin story, and start to dive into the culture of Ancient Rome. Get ready for our exciting new unit!
