Math Tutoring Cancelled 10/31

Dear 3C Parents,

I am canceling math tutoring tomorrow, 10/31.  Most of the students told me they were not planning to attend, so hopefully this does not cause too much of an inconvenience.  Please reach out with any questions!

2 Week Progress Slips

Hello Parents!

We wanted to let you know that our first 2-week progress slip is coming home tomorrow.  You will notice 2 small changes. First, I am including the assessment average at the current time, instead of the average on each test.  Please look at each individual test that comes home to see what areas your child can improve on and what areas they are excelling in!  On the math tests this can be an excellent opportunity to discuss test corrections with your child.   If you have any questions please reach out!

The second change that we are making is participation will now be graded on a 10-point scale to allow for more flexibility with grading, and will give students more opportunity to improve incrementally.

Have a wonderful weekend and look out for tomorrow's post about what is coming up next week!

Best,

Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Chilson, and Ms. Warrem

Math Groups!

Dear 3C Parents,

We talked to a few more parents who were interested in volunteering for math groups.  We decided to create a sign-up genius for anyone else who may be interested!  Math groups are Wednesdays from 8-8:35.  You may come up and join us when you drop your child off at school.  We so appreciate your help!

Best,

Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Chilson, and Ms. Warren

Quarter 2 Week 2

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all having a wonderful and relaxing weekend! We hosted our annual comfy pants and dip party! It was so wonderful getting to talk to you all about your children and their progress during conferences last week. I am excited to continue guiding our classroom learning for the rest of the second quarter. Please reach out with any questions and see below for information on what is to come this week!

Best,

Mrs. Bowers

P.S. Mrs. Chilson's birthday is on Thursday! I know our class mom is getting things together, but I just wanted to remind everyone. We will be making her cards on class. :)

Language Arts:
We will be picking up our Spalding spelling again this week and there will be a test on Friday. For literature, writing, and grammar we will be taking a three pronged approach to the personal narrative and short story. As we begin to study the art of the story, we will start writing our own personal narrative in class. I am excited to see their creativity and hear their insights about all the stories we read.

Math:
Long division sure has given us a run for our money! We will continue to practice those skills, alongside of multiplication, on Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be a test on Units 1-3 on Thursday. Then, we begin a new unit just on the math facts of 6-9. We will be using those new facts to multiply and divide all the while.

Science:
This week we will continue our study on the human body.  There will be a short quiz on Tuesday to review cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.  We will be discussing the muscular system and making a fun booklet for this system. Students will be able to explain voluntary versus involuntary muscles and  how muscle pairs work together!

History:

This week in history we will continue to learn about Ancient Rome! We will look at more of the Roman myths and decipher what the moral was and which virtues were shown in each myth. We will also be taking a look at the difference between patricians and plebeians!

Dear 3C Parents,

We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Chilson has been offered a position as a lead teacher in first grade starting in January.  While we will miss her greatly, we are so excited for her to officially have her own classroom!  Additionally, Ms. Warren will be taking over Coach Rubino’s PE class during her maternity leave.  She will return to us when Coach Rubino returns.  We are excited that we will get to see Ms. Warren in PE every week during that time.  I have resumed my position as lead teacher and will be with the students for the remainder of the year!  We will be sharing the news with the students this morning.  If you have any questions about this transition feel free to email us.

Best,

Mrs. Bowers

Quarter 2 Week 1

Dear 3C Parents,

It was a great pleasure to be back in the classroom last week getting to know your scholars better.  Mrs. Chilson and Ms. Warren did an excellent job at guiding our scholars through quarter 1.  I am looking forward to conferences and getting to learn about our scholars from the people who know them best- you!  I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun break.  My family and I spent most of the week in Kansas City.  We had a great time visiting family, our favorite KC BBQ restaurants, and even got in a trip to the Kansas City Zoo.
Making friends with a baby orangutan!

Please be advised that every school day is a half day this week to accommodate the conference schedule. There will be no lunch time in school all week, so pack a hearty snack!

Language Arts:
To accommodate the short days, there will be no spelling this week! We will be focusing on reading comprehension skills, summarizing, and grammar. The new concept this week is the direct object. We will not begin our new literature book this week, but will rather enjoy excerpts from The Wind and The Willows as a read aloud. The new poem Catch A Little Rhyme by Eve Merriam will be assigned this week as well.

Math:
To start off the second quarter, in math, we will begin developing division skills. Long division is up and coming so please be available to support with homework! We are having math groups on Wednesday per usual. There will be a quiz on Friday after a short review.

Science:
We will kick off the new quarter with our human body unit.  This week we will be taking a look at cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.  This quarter we study three important organ systems: skeletal, muscular, and nervous system.  This week’s introduction will get the students prepared for these exciting systems.  A study guide will be coming home on Thursday for a very short quiz that will take place next Tuesday!

History:
This week in history we will continue to learn about Ancient Rome! We will look at the roles the Roman gods and goddesses played in the lives of the Ancient Romans. We will also be taking a look at some of the Roman myths and discussing the morals and virtues associated with the myths.

Homework Survey

Dear 3C Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to fill out the homework survey that was sent out by the school.  We appreciate your feedback on this important topic.  As a classroom and as a grade level we will be taking a careful look at the data to make sure we are meeting our goals.  Homework should be averaging about 60 minutes per night.  The breakdown looks something like this: 20 minutes of Reading, 20 minutes of math, 10 minutes of Spalding, and another 10 minutes for Science or History. If the Science or History homework includes a reading passage please feel free to use that for the 20 minutes of reading for the day.  If you have any specific questions please reach out!  We can also discuss at conferences.  We look forward to seeing you then!

Best,

Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Chilson, and Ms. Warren

Mrs. Bowers' Return

3C Parents and Families,

Tomorrow is my official return to school!  I have enjoyed the precious time at home with my daughter and I am so grateful I was able to take the time to be at home with her.  I am looking forward to my return to work and getting to know your children even better.  I have been able to come in about once a week for the first quarter and it was an excellent opportunity to keep up with policies and procedures and get to know your children a little bit.  For the month of October Mrs. Chilson and Ms. Warren are going to remain in 3C to help ease the transition for the students.  As I am now back in my role as lead teacher you may begin emailing me with questions and concerns at kbowers@archwayarete.org.  That being said, you are free to email Mrs. Chilson for now as well, especially during this last week of the quarter.  I look forward to seeing you all at parent teacher conferences!

Best,

Mrs. Kellie Bowers
