from Julius Caesar (Act III, ii, 76-109)
by: William Shakespeare

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;

I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.

The evil that men do lives after them;

The good is oft interred with their bones;

So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus

Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:

If it were so, it was a grievous fault,

And grievously hath Caesar answer’d it.

Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest–

For Brutus is an honourable man;

So are they all, all honourable men–

Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral.

He was my friend, faithful and just to me:

But Brutus says he was ambitious;

And Brutus is an honourable man.

He hath brought many captives home to Rome

Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:

Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?

When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:

Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:

Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;

And Brutus is an honourable man.

You all did see that on the Lupercal

I thrice presented him a kingly crown,

Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?

Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;

And, sure, he is an honourable man.

I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,

But here I am to speak what I do know.

You all did love him once, not without cause:

What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?

O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,

And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;

My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,

And I must pause till it come back to me.

Language Arts:
In Spalding we are going forward with our word list in O, we will also be taking our monthly Spalding benchmark on Monday; this is purely to track student progress and not entered as a grade. In Writing we'll be reading the epic of Gilgamesh and putting the ancient tale into a 3 sentence summary. In Grammar we will continue to explore the 4 sentence types and classify sentences by labeling all of the parts of speech, identifying sentence type, and separating the complete subject from the complete predicate. Our Pinocchio journey is well underway, we are actively exploring how Pinocchio would be better equipped to make good choices has he only gone to school! In poetry we are starting a new selection from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar to compliment our Rome unit.

Math:
We are beginning our division unit by introducing students to quotient and remainder. We will practice dividing 2 and 3 digit numbers by 3, 4, and 5 throughout the week.

History:
We are discussing the fascinating topic of the Roman gods and goddesses and discussing Roman myths. By the end of the week we will be learning about how Roman society was set up and considering the difference in the lives of Plebeians and Patricians.

Science:
We will go forward in our study of the skeletal system by observing what happens when a bone is place in vinegar for an extended amount of time. Please click here to review the study guide on the skeleton. We will look at different types of bone and joints.

Here is what next week will look like:

Tuesday - Science (Cells, tissue, and organs) Quiz
Wednesday - History (Rivers) take-home test is due
Thursday - Spelling Test (20 words)

*Please remember to have your scholars working on their Pinocchio Projects.

Language Arts:
In Spalding we will be exploring our next 20 words in the O list; we will also be going back and adding a few of our current words to the rule pages at the front of our Spalding notebooks.In our writing class we are still exploring The History of the World; we will be focusing on comprehension and summarizing information on the 12 tribes of Israel and the Code of Hammurabi. In Grammar we are exploring the four kinds of sentences: declarative, imperative (or command), interrogative (or question), and exclamatory! We are also reviewing the functions of nouns, adverbs, and adjectives with the support of our Shurley jingles. If you would like to help you scholars with these here is a link to the jingles, but I must warn you, they are extremely catchy and may infect you with an ear worm. In Literature we are continuing on our Pinocchio journey, Pinocchio's antics are proving to be very entertaining in the classroom and we are having many beautiful discussions on the virtues because of this classic text!

Math:
We are continuing our exploration of multiplication, we will be reinforcing that the word "product" is prompting for the answer to a multiplication problem. We will be multiplying 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers by 2,3,4, and 5. We will also be creating a foldable for our math journals to reinforce the proper steps to completing a word problem.

History:
In History, our Rivers unit is coming to an end; we will be sending a take home quiz home on Monday which will be due back by Wednesday. Starting on Tuesday we are finally starting our Ancient Rome Unit!! We will begin by discussing the ancient Mediterranean world, introduce students to timelines and give instructions on how to use them and begin an introduction to the Roman Gods and goddesses.

Science:
In Science we are continuing our close look at the human body. Monday will consist of a review game in class to prepare for our assessment on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will begin discussing the skeletal system and memorizing bones; a fantastic extension of what our scholars are studying in P.E. Your scientists will come home with tales of fun observations they are making in the classroom.

As always, please reach out to me with questions or concerns.

Best,

Ms. Caro

Dear Parents,

It was so lovely to see you all during parent teacher conferences this week.  If we had any follow up action items I will do my best to get that information out to you by Tuesday.  We had a great week in 3C, though it was different with our half-day schedules!  I am looking forward to getting back to an almost normal week schedule next week.  On that note, please remember that there is no school on Monday October 19th.

Here is what is coming up next week!

Assessments:

Tuesday-none
Wednesday-none
Thursday-Math Test (multiplication and division word problems with bar models)
Friday- Spalding Assessment

Subjects:

Literature: This week we will be starting Pinocchio! We will be reading the first 6 chapters.  The students are really excited to begin our new unit.  Please make sure your student brings in their copy by Tuesday, if they haven’t already.

Spalding:

This week we will be learning 20 words since we have a 4-day week.  Please make sure your student is practicing these words every night in preparation of Friday’s assessment.

Poetry:

We are learning a a portion of a poem from Macbeth this week (Act 4, Scene 1).  The poem will come home in the students folder’s on Monday.  Poetry recitations are coming up quick: Friday August 30th.  I am confident that the students will fine, as this is a shorter poem, but make sure you are practicing with them nightly.

Grammar/Writing:

We will be working on summarizing more stories from our “Story of the World” curriculum.  We will be reading about Ancient Sumer and the story of Abraham from the Bible. We will also be working on our use of adjectives this week!

History:

We will be continuing the unit we began last week on rivers of the world.  This is our last full week of the rivers unit.  There will be a test in week 3.  If you would like to get ahead on the study process have your child bring home their packet and review a bit each night.

We will be starting our next unit on the human body this week!  We will be starting with cells, tissues, and organs.  I am positive the students will love this next unit!

Read-a-Thon
Mark your calendars for our second annual Read-a-thon! This special day will be on Friday, October 30th, and will occur alongside our first on-site book fair! Students may come to school dressed as their favorite classical literary characters, scientists, or historical figures. The goal of this event is to stir a continuous love for reading and an opportunity for lifelong learning. Costumes need not come directly from the grade level curriculum, though they must be classically on-mission. We kindly ask that you send costume ideas to your classroom teacher for approval by Friday, October 23rd. Be sure that costumes allow students to engage in regular school day activities like recess, lunch, and some curricular instruction. The headmasters, teachers, fellow scholars, and students' family members will read to students throughout the day. The Read-a-thon will be a huge celebration of reading for our entire school community!

Book Fair

The Archway Arete book fair will run from Monday, October 26th - Friday, October 30th in the resource room. We look forward to providing this exciting opportunity for students and parents to purchase books for their personal and classroom libraries. The class that purchases the most books from the week-long book fair will be awarded a pizza party. Profits from the book fair will go directly to children's books for the Arete library. The book fair will be open for parents at specific times during the school day, so please plan to attend! There are prizes to be won for participating!
