Quarter 3 Week 4

Dear 3C Families,

We have a fun week coming up with Field Day on Friday! See the link below to sign up to help: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4daeaa2da0fb6-field

Great Hearts Day is fast approaching! Please read the note below for some basic information, more to come!

A Day for Friendship - Wednesday, February 14th is Great Hearts Day! We have reserved this special day to focus on the virtue of friendship and celebrate the traits that make a great-hearted student. Teachers are planning interactive and fun activities centered around these topics, and time will be set aside for students to create hand-made Great Hearts Day cards for their classmates.  Archway Arete strives to cultivate a rich, academic environment rooted in the classical tradition. This many times requires popular culture to be left at the door. On that note, students will not be permitted to bring store-bought valentines, candy, or gifts to school. Thank you for partnering with us.

Here is what is on the agenda for this week:

Language Arts:
We will continue reading the Trumpet of the Swan this week, deepen our understanding of prepositions, and complete our Informative piece on the Titanic.  Father William by Lewis Carroll should be memorized for recitations in Feb.7th.

Math:
We will wrap up our fractions unit this week with lessons on fractions on a numberline, fractions of a set, and fractions of money!  The assessment on Friday will include all of the skills learned this week, as well as adding and subtracting fractions.

Science:
This week we will begin our unit on light!  This will include learning the main source if light here on Earth (the sun!), experimenting with shadows, and discussing different properties of light.

History:

We will begin with our Earliest Americans unit this week! We will look at how the ancient peoples found it possible to migrate using the Beringia Land Bridge. We will also see how the first settlers farmed, hunted, and gathered.

Please reach out with any questions!

Best,

Mrs. Bowers

Royalty for a Day

Help our classroom win the “Royalty for a Day” contest!

I am sure you’ve heard from your child by now that there is a “Royalty for a Day” contest underway, and your help is needed!  We still need $22,000 in tax credits to meet our $75,000 goal and here is how your child’s class wins, and what they will receive:

·         The classroom that brings in the most Tax Credit dollars by Great Hearts Day (2/14/18) will be Royalty for a day!
·         The teachers will be crowned royalty and receive gift cards.
·         The class will wear spirit shirts and receive a treat on the royal day to celebrate.

The top classes will be posted on the white board each Friday at pick-up and the winning classroom will be announced at the end of the day on Feb. 14th .  Leave no one out!  Ask grandparents, aunts, neighbors, coaches, and friends to give their Tax Credit to Archway Arete!  Here is the GIVING LINK:  https://archwayarete.configio.com/moneyrequest?id=5

Let’s make this happen for our class!

Bard Competition

Archway Arete Students and Families,

Throughout Western civilization, bards have been keepers of tradition, reciting the poetry of their people and passing on oral history. At every grade level, our students practice memorization and recitation of poems in the classroom. This year, we will again be joining our fellow Great Hearts schools in holding a Bard Competition for our 3rd through 5th grade students, whom we will challenge to memorize and recite poetry. Over the course of two rounds and two poems, we will winnow the field to find our school’s most skillful bard. That student will be named School Bard for the year and will represent Archway Arete at the Great Hearts Archway Bard Competition in the spring.
If your student is interested in competing, you can download the competition guidelines and registration form emailed to you. These forms will also be available through the School Office or your student’s teacher. Whether your student participates or not, we invite all of our Archway families to join us for these public recitations, which promise to be engaging reminders of this oral tradition.
If you have any questions about the Bard Competition, please contact Mrs. Bowers at kbowers@archwayarete.org.
                                                                        Regards,
Kellie Bowers
